Luxor (al-Uqsur) is a city in Upper (southern) Egypt and the capital of Luxor Governorate.

Luxor is the world’s greatest outdoor museum, the centre for some of the most magnificent remains of Pharaonic Egypt.

Luxor means “Palaces” and the city was known to the ancient Greeks as Thebes.  It was said that Thebes was not only the most beautiful but the stateliest city in the world.   Luxor is actually three towns in one – the commercial centre of Luxor on the East bank of the Nile, Karnak, the immense temple complex, and the Theban Necropolis on the opposite West Bank.
